Home breathalyzers

What is a home breathalyzer device?

A home breathalyzer is a portable, handheld device that measures a user’s breath alcohol content (BrAC). Home breathalyzers can be used for personal use or may be court-ordered for drug- or alcohol-related offenses. Home breathalyzers can communicate test results and report any violations or tampering to a monitoring center.

How do I use a home breathalyzer?

To use a home breathalyzer, a person must blow into the mouthpiece, which can be permanent (fold-away) or detachable (slip-on). Once complete, the home breathalyzer will provide a three-digit BrAC readout. If the result is over your state’s legal BAC limit and you’re on probation, a violation will be recorded and tracked by authorities and could result in legal consequences.

How are home breathalyzers different than other alcohol monitoring devices?

Unlike ignition interlock devices (IIDs), home breathalyzers require no mounting or installation. They do not need to be tethered to a charging cord and many models offer wireless data tracking. Home breathalyzers are lightweight, portable and wireless.

How much do home breathalyzers cost?

Home breathalyzers cost an average of $100 but can range from $40 to $825.

Are home breathalyzers required by law?

A home breathalyzer may be court-ordered under certain circumstances, including drug- and alcohol-related offenses.

Court-ordered home breathalyzers offer features similar to ignition interlock devices and may include a camera with facial detection, GPS and violation monitoring.

If a home breathalyzer has been ordered for home detention for a DUI arrest, the user will have to provide both random and regular home breathalyzer tests and the results of those tests and any violations will be recorded for parole officers. If the offender fails to take a home breathalyzer test within a certain amount of time, they could face an extension of their sentence or other legal consequences.

Home breathalyzers provide reports to court personnel and enforce house arrest or other no-alcohol requirements.

What’s the latest technology in home breathalyzers?

Advances in technology have allowed for home breathalyzers that operate wirelessly through cellular networks. Other advances include smartphone breathalyzer apps, Bluetooth breathalyzer capabilities, LED readouts, chemical color change indicators and thermal printouts.
